For one night only, Melbourne-based jazz singer Jacqueline Gawler joins forces with one of Australia’s most virtuosic jazz pianists Matt Boden (TAS) to bring you a mid winter pop-up soirée in the impressive architectural setting of THE HIVE Graffiti Apartments in Carlton.
Both accomplished jazz artists, improvisers, and heavy weights in the latin music scene, Jacqueline & Matt met onstage in the acclaimed outfit Panorama Brasil - the country’s foremost Brazilian ensemble featuring the cream of talent in this genre. For one night only they celebrate their musical bond in duet setting, pushing musical boundaries and traversing wide terrain to showcase the beauty of voice & piano.
Contemplative jazz explorations, soulful ballads, bossa nova sung in authentic Portuguese, and upbeat jazz classics from the Great American Songbook all have their place in the hand-picked repertoire for this concert.
MATT BODEN is one of Australia's most versatile and in-demand musician-practitioners, working across an exceptional range of creative roles: pianist, keyboardist, composer, orchestrator, arranger, and producer. His career spans jazz, classical, contemporary, screen music, electronic, neo-soul, hip-hop, ambient, and popular music, and encompasses work in the recording studio, the concert hall, the scoring stage, and the film set. As a pianist and live performer, Boden commands a performance career of genuine international distinction. He has performed at major festivals and venues across Australia and the world, including the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues, MONA FOMA, Dark MOFO, the Paris Jazz Festival, the Jazz Pas Grave Festival (Paris), and the Ascona Jazz Festival (Switzerland). International venue appearances include Sunset/Sunside (Paris), A-Trane (Berlin), Caveau de la Huchette (Paris), and CJW (Shanghai). In Australia he has performed at Hamer Hall (Arts Centre Melbourne), the Melbourne Recital Centre, Bennetts Lane and its successor The JazzLab, The Paris Cat, and Salamanca Arts Centre, among many others. In October 2024 he performed as co-arranger, orchestrator, and pianist at Hamer Hall as part of the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, presenting an original ten-work suite of Antônio Carlos Jobim arrangements for Panorama Brasil and Orchestra Victoria under conductor Jessica Gethin.

JACQUELINE GAWLER is an Australian singer, percussionist, composer & educator, and arguably Australia’s finest gringa intérprete of Brazilian song. She has featured as a singer and percussionist in many high calibre ensembles in Australia and overseas, working with the finest musicians throughout Australia, Asia and Brazil. She is perhaps most known for her work as a singer-composer-percussionist with Australia’s multi award-winning vocal quintet Coco’s Lunch, who recently released their 8th studio album Misra Chappu to rave reviews, reaching the TOP 10 in the TRANSGLOBAL WORLD MUSIC CHARTS. Jacqueline sealed her passion for Brazilian music by traveling to Brazil to record a pop album with some of Rio de Janeiro's most acclaimed musicians and recording a duet in English & Portuguese with Brazilian pop star Jorge Vercilo. She returned to Rio De Janeiro in 2011 for a 6 month stint to study Portuguese, launch her album Ambrosia with some of Rio De Janeiro’s top musicians, film the music clip to her song Sahara Nights, and immerse herself in the local culture and music. She also collaborated with Brazilian singer/songwriter and The Voice Brasil finalist Paulo Loureiro to write lyrics for his new album, as well as writing her own Brazil-inspired material.

The Hive Graffiti Apartments is the first in a series of Hip Hop buildings designed by ITN Architecture. It is a joint development by the architect Zvi Belling and ‘Prowla’ of the Rock Da City graffiti crew, both of whom now reside in the building. The slightly sci-fi interiors over four levels are shaped by the arrows and expressive hip hop language of the façade, and the remnants of the existing brickwork are worked into very compact planning on a small site.
