Boonwurrung Language Intensive - Weekend Immersion
About
Join us for a rare and significant opportunity! For the first time we are offering a fullweekend of Boonwurrung language immersion, custom designed for teachers and educators
working on Boonwurrung Country.
Across the weekend, participants will gain firsthand insight into of the 40+ years of
reclamation work led by Senior Boonwurrung Elder, Professor N’arwee’t Carolyn
Briggs AM, along with the next phase of language reconstruction being undertaken
by N’arwee’t and Community Linguist and PhD candidate Alison Soutar, who brings
two decades of specialised sector experience.
This carefully crafted intensive will deepen your understanding of the Elder led
journey of reclaiming the Boonwurrung language and offers exclusive access to the
behind the scenes processes of language reclamation. You’ll also engage directly with
new language work being shared publicly for the first time through place based
reconstruction workshops.
You will come away with practical language to describe the Country you live and
work on, strengthened confidence in pronunciation, and a clearer understanding of
how to respectfully acknowledge and use Boonwurrung language in your classroom.
Additional highlights include a special session on language, culture and wellbeing in
the classroom led by Jaeden Williams Briggs, and a live reading of Boonwurrung
dreaming stories set on local Country. The weekend also builds foundational
knowledge of Australian Aboriginal languages, including their structures, sound
systems and language ecologies.
This intensive brings you into direct conversation with the team at the heart of the
Boonwurrung language reclamation journey and contributes directly to their ongoing
work. It’s an opportunity not to be missed!
