Transform your Nature Strip into a Wildlife Wonderland
About
Tired of mowing your nature strip and getting nothing out of it except grass clippings? Imagine replacing that patch of lawn with a vibrant habitat filled with native flowers, buzzing bees, butterflies, beneficial insects and beautiful small birds. Join us for a hands-on workshop and discover how nature strips can become valuable spaces for urban biodiversity.Djila-tjarriu Community Hub, 18 Donegal Drive, Alfredton
Date: Saturday 18 July
Time: 10.00am - 12.30pm
Working together, we'll develop a planting plan for the Djila-tjarriu nature strip and explore the practical steps needed to transform a conventional grass verge into a thriving wildlife habitat while maintaining pedestrian and traffic safety.
During the workshop you’ll
• use the new City of Ballarat Nature Strip Guidelines
• assess a nature strip for its soil, views, aesthetics, infrastructure, zoning and mulch
• design a nature strip planting that enhances the environment for people and wildlife.
• choose from a palette of about 25 local native groundcover species to suit your design aspirations
• take home a few local native plants for your own garden
The outcome will be a practical plan for creating a beautiful, biodiverse, low maintenance nature strip which provides valuable food and shelter for native wildlife. You’ll go home with an appreciation of the vital role that nature strips can play in enhancing urban biodiversity and the skills and confidence to change your own nature strip into a wildlife wonderland. Together we can create a healthier, more biodiverse neighbourhood - one nature strip at a time.
Then put the plan into action. Join the Djila-tjarriu Nature Strip Community Planting Day in August where we'll bring the design to life with nearly 1000 local native plants and beautiful scoria mulch.
Venue: Djila-tjarriu is located at 18 Donegal Drive, Alfredton. Turn onto Galway Drive from Ballarat - Carngham Road and follow it to the end where you will see Djila-tjarriu. There is an off-street carpark in Donegal Drive to the left of the building.
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided and toilet facilities are available.
Workshop places are limited. Please cancel your ticket/s if you can no longer attend so that we can make your place available to others.
