About

You are warmly invited to the Tocal launch of Personalities, Purpose and Place: The Making of Tocal College by Cameron Archer.
The book tells the story of the people, the sequence of events, and the decisions that led to the building of the then C.B. Alexander Presbyterian Agricultural College, Tocal, and its operation until its transfer to the New South Wales Government in 1970.
The launch will be addressed by Mr Darren Bayley, Principal of Tocal College and Director of Education, NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development.

About the Book
How does the will of a bachelor grazier transform a sleepy rural estate into one of Australia’s most successful agricultural colleges? Personalities, Purpose and Place tells the extraordinary story of Tocal College—a tale of vision, determination, and the remarkable individuals who turned an improbable dream into reality.
In 1947, Charles Boyd Alexander died, leaving behind an estate and a will that would baffle courts and trustees for over a decade. His tortuous legal journey would ultimately create something unprecedented: an agricultural college born not from government initiative, but from testamentary intention.
Edward Alan Hunt, a barefoot boy who once fished along the Paterson River, became the visionary lawyer who declared ‘Tocal would be an ideal place for an agricultural college,’ and devoted his life to making it happen. Then there were the Alexander siblings, whose wealth and nineteenth-century Scottish values shaped the College’s foundation; the trustees, architects, educators and farmers who navigated years of uncertainty to build something lasting; and the first brave staff and students who believed in a fledgling institution when its future seemed precarious.
Dr Cameron Archer arrived as a lecturer in 1975 and served as Principal from 1987 to 2015. He knew many of the key figures personally and witnessed firsthand the College’s evolution over four decades. Drawing on oral histories, personal interviews, archival documents and his own memories, Archer weaves together the voices of those who made Tocal possible.

The book will be available at the launch and subsequently from cameronarcher.com.au for $35.00, plus $12.00 postage.
