Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) wrote his Divine Comedy while exiled from his native Florence on charges of political corruption. The Comedy - in its three parts, Hell, Purgatory and Paradise - is the tale of a journey of a soul seeking wholeness. Seven centuries later, and in a world that seems to reject unified theories of anything, Dante is read enthusiastically by young generations of students and inspires art, cinema, dance, literature, on every continent. In part, this is because Dante’s vision is so deeply personal, as if he is offering us his experience and inviting us to compare it with ours.This talk will outline the world Dante constructs in the Divine Comedy and suggest why it still has such appeal.
