For July we're reading Said the Dead, by Doireann Ní Ghríofa. It features a former Victorian mental hospital which is being converted into luxury apartments in Cork. A woman passes the sale sign and can't resist. She begins hunting down the stories of the building's former inhabitants, pulling threads from the archive until the past starts pulling back. The deeper she goes, the further she drifts from her life as mother, spouse, daughter. The ghosts, it turns out, are not easy to leave.From the author of A Ghost in the Throat comes a novel that defies category. Part auto-fiction, part ghost story, part historical record. Critics have called it "sublime" and "astounding and utterly fresh." We just call it unmissable.
