About
Join us in an engaging discussion to explore how feminist issues are represented across media forms. From stories, poems, TV, music and art, we will explore the intersectional themes of environmentalism, Indigenous justice and human rights.Participants will be guided to reflect on these themes through both individual reflection and supportive group discussion before discovering how to turn our insights into action with an overview of ActionAid Australia's campaigns and how to get involved!
Food and beverages will be provided with all attendees invited to join the Melbourne Activist group for lunch afterwards.
Media Criteria
Any form of media (Books, Poems, TV, Music, Art, Dance) that centres around the theme of Feminism and may also touch on intersecting themes including environmentalism, Indigenous justice, human rights, LGBTQI+ rights and disability awareness.
The media piece may be whole or part (eg. Paragraph from a book, Scene in a Movie) but must be shared and appropriately summarised by the presenter within 15 minutes.
The presenter does not need to dissect/critically analyse the piece and can instead promote open and free-flowing discussion from attendees based on the below reflection questions.
Reflection Questions
- How does this piece align with Feminist values and/or messages?
- How does the piece reflect intersections between Feminism and other issues (eg. environmentalism)?
- Does this piece remind you of any past, current or prospective world issues?
- What do you think the creator is trying to tell us?
- Do you see anything wrong with this piece? Any bias? Do you have a counter-viewpoint or argument against what the piece is trying to say/advocate for?
- Do you see elements of this piece reflected in your own life?
- Whose voices are missing from the piece?

Venue information & Accessibility
This is an accessible venue. An accessible entry is on the side Hertford Street entryway, please let us know via your registration details if you'll require this entrance on the day so we can have someone assist you! If you're entering via the main entrance on Johnston Street, there is one step to access the door. We will welcome you in on the day - please ring the bell upon arrival.
An accessible bathroom is located on the ground floor of the venue.
This is a no-smoking/vaping venue and event. If you are feeling unwell on the day - please let us know, and cancel your ticket so we can ensure everyone's health is prioritised. Feel comfortable to wear and bring a mask.
