From Anxiety to Confidence Webinar
About
Monday July 27th @ 6:30pm-7:30pm, join us for the one hour live webinar run by Clinical Psychology Registrar Emma Mahoney and Educational and Developmental Psychologist Jessica SchembriTopic: From anxiety to confidence - coaching adolescents through discomfort
Overview
In this brief parent session, we will explore how our natural instinct to protect children from stress and discomfort can, over time, unintentionally reduce their confidence and resilience. While accommodations are sometimes necessary and appropriate, consistently removing all situations that provoke anxiety—such as tests, presentations, or challenging tasks—can reinforce the belief that these situations are dangerous or unmanageable.
The session would cover:
* Why anxiety and discomfort are a normal and important part of growth
* How avoidance can strengthen fear and reduce self-confidence
* The difference between supportive accommodations and enabling avoidance
* Practical ways parents can coach children through challenges rather than removing them
* How gradual exposure to manageable stress helps build coping skills, independence, and resilience
