For its next gathering, Ramona's Queer Book Club is reading the International Booker-winning Taiwan Travelogue by Yáng Shuāng-zǐ, translated by Lin King.Set in 1930s Japan-occupied Taiwan, this book does a double act: not only is it a delicious romance between two women but it also has a post-colonial political core.
Structurally playful, it is presented as a rediscovered, freshly translated 1938 travel memoir - many people originally believed it to be exactly that when it was published. But this is a thoroughly modern work and take on life in the 30s, featuring a young Japanese novelist's arrival in Taiwan, who is guided through island life by an interpreter she quickly becomes infatuated with.
Themes of national identity and colonialism are set against chapters named for the Taiwanese delicacies the interpreter introduces the novelist to. It's a look at the power dynamics that impact our intimate relationships. This book will make you hungry, it will challenge you and ultimately reward you ten-fold for the work you put in.
