About

Join the JCU Sea Turtle Network for an interactive workshop where you'll step into the role of a conservation practitioner and tackle real Australian sea turtle case studies.

Working in teams, you'll explore how people's values, behaviours and decision-making influence conservation outcomes, then use behaviour change frameworks to design practical, evidence-based solutions.

Together, we'll investigate challenges including:
- Industrial development and mining in Western Australia
- Light pollution and coastal urbanisation in Queensland
- Shark management programs in New South Wales

The workshop will feature a special introduction by Rod Mast, CEO of the Oceanic Society, who will explain why understanding human behaviour is essential for conserving biodiversity. Students will then be guided through the workshop by Bethany Smith, JCU environmental social scientist, who will help unpack the social science tools used by conservation professionals around the world.

Whether you're interested in marine biology, environmental science, conservation, policy or science communication, this workshop will give you a new perspective on solving complex conservation challenges.
