The Light on the Hill by Ross McMullin
Join us for the launch of the new edition of 'The Light on the Hill' by Ross McMullin with Jenny Macklin AC and the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP.
Award-winning historian and storyteller Ross McMullin’s revised and updated ALP history 'The Light on the Hill' covers the crucial and eventful 135 years of the Labor Party including the remarkable 2025 federal election.
His definitive centenary ALP history was first published to great acclaim 35 years ago. Now updated with coverage of the 1991–2025 period critical to understanding today’s players and politics, it is, as before, an entertaining, action-packed, warts-and-all narrative full of illuminating pen-portraits and vivid anecdotes.
Join us at the award-winning and heritage-listed “Solidarity Hall” at Victorian Trades Hall to hear from Ross, Jenny Macklin AC and the Hon Tanya Plibersek MP.
Ross McMullin is an award-winning historian, biographer, and storyteller. His books include the award-winning Pompey Elliott and two multi-biographies, Farewell, Dear People: Biographies of Australia’s Lost Generation, which won national awards including the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History, and its sequel, Life So Full of Promise, which won The Age Book of the Year Award.
Jenny Macklin served 23 years as the federal member for Jagajaga and was the first woman to become the deputy leader of a major Australian political party. In view of her crucial roles in the Apology to the Stolen Generations, the development of the Closing the Gap framework, the introduction of Australia’s first National Paid Parental Leave Scheme, the delivery of the largest-ever pension increase and the design and implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, it is understandable that she has been described as the most influential Australian ever in social policy.
Tanya Plibersek, the federal member for Sydney since 1998, is the minister for Social Services. Her portfolios in the governments led by Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard included Housing, Health and Status of Women. As part of the Rudd government’s successful response to the Global Financial Crisis, Tanya’s public housing reforms to combat homelessness were particularly effective. Like Jenny Macklin, Tanya was deputy ALP leader during two parliamentary terms; she was deputy alongside Bill Shorten from 2013 to 2019. Later, when the initial Albanese government was elected, she became minister for the Environment and Water.
Free, but bookings are essential.
