This webinar explores the therapeutic use of childhood memories in counselling and psychotherapy with survivors of complex trauma.
While many trauma-informed approaches focus primarily on symptom reduction and stabilisation, this webinar examines how carefully facilitated childhood memory recall can assist clients to develop greater self-understanding, emotional regulation, self-compassion and coherent life narratives. Participants will examine the role of memories recall as well as natural and experiential avoidance in trauma treatment and learn practical strategies for recognising, respecting and working therapeutically with the content that arises in a consulting room.
The webinar includes clinical examples drawn from work with survivors of childhood abuse, domestic violence, refugees and asylum seekers, incarcerated women and survivors of institutional childhood sexual abuse. The session also addresses ethical considerations, including the reliability of autobiographical memory, risks of emotional overwhelm, false memory concerns, informed consent and maintaining client safety throughout memory-focused interventions.
