RAE Golf Day - Sir John Holland Cup
About
This competition was established by Sir John Holland more than 65 years ago and has been contested annually ever since. Today, it remains the only privately administered golf competition conducted at the prestigious Royal Melbourne Golf Club.Sir John Holland was a distinguished Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) officer and member of the elite Z Special Unit during the Second World War, eventually attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Following the war, he founded the construction company that bears his name, drawing heavily on the leadership principles, discipline, and organisational methods he had developed through his military service.
It was often said that there were two prerequisites for joining the John Holland organisation in its early years: being an ex-serviceman and a cricketer. This culture reflected Holland’s strong belief in teamwork, resilience, and character—qualities he valued both on the sporting field and in the workplace.
A passionate golfer and respected leader within the sporting community, Sir John also served as President of the Royal Melbourne Golf Club for several years. In recognition of his enduring connection to both the military and the game of golf, he established this RAE golf competition, creating a lasting legacy that continues to bring together members of the Corps in the spirit of camaraderie, competition, and service.
