Hope Song Cycle
About
It is my great pleasure to invite you to the world premiere of my new song cycle, written for one of Australia’s most beloved mezzo-sopranos, Sally-Anne Russell. In 2023, Sally-Anne was touring through the Mid North when she dropped into my Burra home and studio for a pot of green tea. I handed her my setting of Emily Dickinson’s Hope Is the Thing with Feathers.
The song fitted her voice beautifully. Sally-Anne took Hope around the world with her, from the Sydney Opera House to concert halls across Europe. Inspired, I decided to create a whole song cycle for her. We selected poems by Hone Tūwhare, Sara Teasdale, Christina Rossetti and Frances Frost, weaving together themes of hope, water and birds.
At UKARIA, Sally-Anne will bring Hope home to South Australia and perform the whole cycle for the first time. She will be joined by flautist Linda Pirie, cellist Joseph Freer and harpist Suneetha Carter, in an arrangement I have written especially for the night.
Hope Song Cycle is the third concert in my LOVE LETTERS series. This concert is a love letter to Sally-Anne, a generous friend and glorious singer. It will be recorded live, and Sally-Anne and I will share a pre-concert talk about Hope’s journey from Burra to UKARIA.
