Show season at The Arts Theatre, 53 Angas Street Adelaide: 7-17th April 2027

When a mismatched community choir gets the chance of a lifetime, suddenly every rehearsal matters. As they prepare for a high-stakes performance that could change everything, friendships are tested, rivalries flare, and long-buried secrets come to the surface.

Packed with humour, heart and uplifting music, Choir by Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti is a joyful celebration of ordinary people finding extraordinary strength through singing together. It's a moving and funny story about belonging, second chances, and discovering that the strongest voices are often found when people come together.

Auditions will be in the form of a 10-minute acting audition AND a group singing audition.

Book your acting audition time first and then for the more convenient of the two group singing times. 

The singing auditions are at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Characters

(People from diverse cultural backgrounds are encouraged to audition)

Morgan (40s):

Choir leader, Morgan, is passionate and deeply invested in the group’s success. She pushes herself and others hard, but her drive for recognition creates tension within the choir. Morgan is torn between personal ambition and loyalty to the choir’s sense of community.  ** A strong singing voice is required for Morgan.

Paul (40s):

Paul is the undisputed star of the choir – until newcomer Freddie arrives. Despite minor roles in professional musicals, he has never found the success he craves. Paul is in a messy relationship with James who is forever promising to leave his wife. ** A strong singing voice is required for Paul.

Joy (40s-50s):

Joy is an oddball germaphobe with a love of wet wipes. She has a love-hate relationship with her “best friend” and fellow group member, Esther. Joy and Esther are the comedy double act of the choir.

Esther (40s-50s):

Esther’s is well-meaning but a little bossy, particularly with “best friend” and neighbour Joy. Esther and Joy’s banter make them the comedy double act of the choir.

Ken (50s-60s):

Ken is a gentle lost soul who lacks purpose after his wife leaves him. Ken appears upbeat but often forgets to take care of himself and drifts through life in a bit of a haze.

 Anna (30s-40s):

Anna is the choir’s mother figure. She is warm, caring and instantly takes newcomer Freddie under her wing. Anna is in an abusive relationship and finds solace as a member of the choir. ** A strong singing voice is required for Anna.

Sheila (50s-60s):

Sheila is a charmingly batty kleptomaniac and compulsive liar. Totally without malice she is nevertheless a “tact-free zone”. Despite her foibles, Sheila is a well-loved member of the choir. ** The ability to roller skate and ride a bike would be an advantage.

Freddie (late teens-early 20s):

Coming from a deprived background, Freddie is a shy young singer whose future becomes the choir’s shared cause. Sensitive and gifted, he also struggles with the pressure of expectation.  ** A strong singing voice is required for Freddie.
