Activity Description
A weekend of real caving in the lava tube caves of Budj Bim National Park, run by the Victorian Scout Caving Team. Budj Bim is a dormant volcano with a rich Gunditjmara cultural history, and the caves are wild caves: dark, muddy in places, with rock scrambles, narrow sections and no formed paths or lighting. We will split into small parties and explore several different caves over the weekend.
We are leaving from the hall at 5:30 pm sharp on Friday. Please arrive by 5:15 pm so we can load the trailer and get away on time. Scouts should bring a packed dinner, snacks and a drink bottle in their daypack to eat on the drive, and take travel sickness medication before we leave if required (bring some for the trip home too). It is about a 4 hour drive and we will be setting up camp in the dark, so have a head torch handy in your daypack, not buried in your pack.
We travel up on Friday evening and camp at the national park campground with two other Scout groups. Saturday is a full day of caving: a morning session near the campsite, then a short convoy drive to a second caving area in the park, returning to camp about 5 pm for a campfire dinner. On Sunday morning we break camp and drive to Harmons cave at Byaduk North for a final caving session, with closing parade about 12:30 pm. We will have lunch and then drive home, arriving back at the hall around 6 pm on Sunday.
Please make sure that no nuts or nut products are brought to this camp. This includes muesli bars, peanut butter etc. It is critical that this is followed.
What to expect with the caving
The Caving Team supplies helmets and all specialist gear, and their leaders manage the activity underground. Scouts need old clothes that cover arms and legs (cotton overalls or an old long-sleeved shirt and pants, no shorts), sturdy boots, a bright head torch plus a small backup torch, and spare batteries. Gloves and knee pads are highly recommended. Caving clothes will get dirty and possibly wrecked, so nothing good. A full packing list will be sent to confirmed attendees.
Transport is by leader vehicles, with the gear trailer towed to camp. Please make sure your Scout's medical and dietary details are up to date when booking, as we must carry printed health profiles for everyone going underground.
Cost is $182 per Scout, covering food, camping and activity fees, and travel.
