Learn how to paint in gouache on black paper.Gouache is a pigment rich, opaque medium that dries quickly to a matte finish and has ability to be reactivated with water. With a small kit you can paint almost anywhere.
You will learn how to use the medium and then paint a number of fast small paintings with the aim of building the skills necessary to create your own paintings on location.
Each participant will be provided with the use of brushes and all materials during the workshop so it is a great opportunity to come along and try it out. You will also get a black sketchbook to keep.
We will start the workshop in the gallery learning techniques and then cross the road to paint on location at the river in the afternoon.
Participants will learn about :
How painting the light values only, whilst reserving the black of the surface, allows you to quickly capture fleeting light.
• Different brands and types of gouache.
• Recommended substrates and surface preparation for gouache.
• Gouache painting techniques including blending, wet on wet, tonal layering and dry brushing.
• Simplifying values and creating the illusion of detail.
• Methods to seal and protect your gouache painting.
Please note this workshop is only suitable for ages 14 and up.
Date: Sat 21st November, 2026
Times: 10 am till 3 pm (10am – 12 at the gallery then 1-3pm on location at the river across the road weather permitting)
Venue: Bridge End Studios and Gallery, 252 Yarra St, Warrandyte South (parking across the road)
Cost: $180 Includes use of all materials and each participant gets their very own sketchbook to take home.
Workshop limited to 8 people.
Please bring own chair, hat a water bottle and lunch if required.
If you prefer there are many cafes nearby or you could bring your own lunch to enjoy by the river.
