About

The use of Indigenous concepts in our languages, the ongoing deconstruction of colonisation, the interrogation of history and all of the other big questions in the world today that artists bring to our attention for Indigenous communities, create a dynamic circle of renewal.’
Jolene Rickard
Marramarra is a word meaning to create make or do in the Wiradjuri language. From 2016 – 2024 art historian and researcher Jessica Neath worked together with Wiradjuri and Ngunnawal artist and curator Brook Garru Andrew to share conversations with leading contemporary artists and Indigenous knowledge holders across Australia, Canada, Alaska, Finland, Japan and beyond. Indigenous artists and communities were invited to share their own stories through conversations, art, workshops and gatherings, guided by Indigenous frameworks of knowledge and aspirations for the future. Their collaboration resulted in the publication marramarra – Indigenous artists making history visible.
Join Jessica Neath to hear about this collaboration and share some of the stories and artworks in marramarra. Learn how Indigenous artists around the world address issues such as climate change, genocide, land rights and repatriation of Ancestral remains and cultural belongings, finding pathways to healing.
