navā - ALEC ILYINE & POLY VARGHESE
About
Naarm based duo navā launch their first EP "Rain Flower", out now on Ramble Records. Featuring Mohan veena (Indian slide guitar) player Poly Varghese and Belgian guitarist Alec Ilyine on acoustic steel-string and Japanese Taishogoto. Both solo artists in their own right, Alec's knowledge of Indian Classical Music and Poly's ability to adapt to new situations helped them find a common language where lots of small musical intricacies form in the moment. Bringing their own backgrounds and their openness to explore each other’s musical ideas to open the door to a new kind of collaboration where the music is not simply a collage of different backgrounds, but a true mix of different cultures and ideas. The different compositions are used as a base for their musical exploration, leaving space for magic to happen. Both skilled improvisers the music takes them on a journey which changes the moment they are playing it.
Alec will open the show solo presenting his new album "Drift Lines" that came out on Ramble Records end of June. Alec will be using acoustic steel-string guitar and iPad, electronics and field recordings to create experimental sonic landscapes to go on a complex inner journey via fingerpicking compositions where improvisation is key.
navā – Sanskrit/Hindi: 'new' • Persian navā: 'melody/song' – new music rooted in melody and tradition – an ambient contemporary crossover.
