In August we're reading Air by Christian Kracht, author of the wildly popular Eurotrash. In it we meet a reclusive interior designer, with tightly held aesthetic beliefs, who travels from his home in Orkney to undertake an usual project in Norway. A dramatic weather event there flips this book on its head, and soon we are plunged into a plague-ridden medieval world. The trippy path of this book is how these two narratives come together.Described by one Guardian reviewer as a "metaphysical jigsaw puzzle", Air is resistant to singular interpretation, much like Katie Kitamura's Audition. It unfolds as a haunting journey through a layered universe that may be a dream, the afterlife or reality's inverted twin.
