Talking to your community about rental bonds
About
Bond money is often a renter's biggest financial asset. Losing it unfairly, or not knowing how to claim it, can really impact people. For community workers supporting renters, especially those already under cost-of-living pressure, understanding how bond protection works is essential. This free online session will walk you through the four key stages of bond protection: what to do when a tenancy starts, how to build an evidence trail during the tenancy, how to claim a bond back at the end, and what happens if a dispute ends up at NCAT.
We'll also cover what's new: the NSW Government's Smart Rental Bonds scheme, which allows eligible renters to transfer their bond straight to a new tenancy instead of finding a second bond while waiting for their old one back.
We'll give you plain-language ways to explain all of this to the people you support, plus practical resources and referral pathways for more complex situations.
The session runs for 40 minutes, followed by 20 minutes of live Q&A, so bring your questions for our tenancy experts.
Who should attend: Community workers and community organisers supporting renters across NSW.
