3pm OMD Workshop A: Libretto read through of The InheritanceEver wondered what goes into writing the libretto (text) of an opera? Come and hear about composer/librettist Emma Jayakumar’s latest comic opera project The Inheritance. A gloriously chaotic comic opera of greed, grudges, and ghastly taxidermy, The Inheritance follows the delightfully awful Rupert and Florence Chuck as they hover like vultures around the deathbed of wealthy Aunt Gladys — only to discover the old menace has one final trick
up her sleeve. Expect fake grief, buried jewels, bad taxidermy, disastrous wills, insurance fraud, and a maid named Poppy who may be sharper than everyone else in the room. By the end, everyone is broke, conspicuously “povvo,” and tangled together in a deliciously ridiculous scheme for revenge and counterfeit diamonds. Set for full premiere in October 2027, a rare chance to see an opera in its pre music infancy.
