About

An exciting two day tour with many exclusive viewings, organised by the Walter Burley Griffin Society in collaboration with Canberra Modern, to celebrate Walter Burley Griffin's sesquicentenary in 2026.

Saturday 17 October 2026
Tour 9.45am – 5.00pm
Meet at the Capitol Theatre, 113 Swanston Street, Melbourne
A special viewing of the spectacular interior of the Capitol Theatre (1922-1924). Speakers Peter Mallet (Six Degrees Architects) and Marc Morel (RMIT) will talk about Marion Mahony and Walter Burley Griffin’s design and the recent extensive restoration of the interiors. Enjoy lunch on Lygon Street, then a 15 minute walk to the University of Melbourne to see the fabulous Newman College (1915-1917) and its amazing interiors. The coach will then go to Toorak where you’ll see several Griffin residences from the street, view the interior of one of the “Langi” flats (1926), and the intriguing interior of an Eric Nicholls designed house called “Mullion” (1928). Return by coach to CBD.

Sunday 18 October 2026
Tour 8.30am to 5.00pm
Meet at Savoy on Little Collins Hotel, 630 Little Collins Street, Melbourne
The coach will go first to Essendon Incinerator (1929). Learn about its design, innovations and original operation. The coach will then travel to Heidelberg to visit the Ethel and Vaughan Griffin House (1924) followed by a boxed lunch in the grounds of the Heide Museum of Modern Art. In the afternoon the coach will take you to see inside the Griffins’ own tiny residence they called “Pholiota” (1922) and from the street its neighbour the Lippincott House (1917) at Eaglemont. From there a 5 minute coach trip to the Skipper House (1927). Enjoy the neighbouring Outlook Park Reserve and nearby the Annear house (1903) designed by Desbrowe Annear who aimed to create an Australian family house that was true to the arts and crafts spirit without reference to historical styles. Return by coach to CBD.

Ticket price includes Saturday café lunch and Sunday boxed lunch.
