Problem Solving - Extension in Upper Primary
How do we challenge our most capable mathematicians without creating separate programs or simply giving them more work? This one-hour professional learning session explores practical strategies for extending high-achieving students through rich mathematical problem solving. Drawing on research from Emeritus Professor Peter Sullivan and the principles behind The Maths Project, participants will discover how high-ceiling tasks provide meaningful challenge while remaining accessible to every learner.
The session will demonstrate how carefully designed problems encourage reasoning, creativity, mathematical communication and multiple solution pathways, allowing advanced students to think more deeply rather than simply move more quickly through the curriculum. Teachers will leave with classroom-ready problems, practical extension strategies and a framework for creating a culture where every student can be challenged, engaged and successful in mathematics.
