About

This training supports allied health professionals to explore how self-advocacy can be meaningfully facilitated for neurodivergent children and adolescents through a neurodiversity-affirming lens.

Empowering children to understand themselves, communicate their needs, and confidently advocate in the environments that matter most.

Self-advocacy isn't about teaching children to fit into the world! It's about helping them understand themselves, recognise their strengths and needs, and develop the skills and confidence to communicate what helps them thrive.

Facilitating Self-Advocacy in the Paediatric Neurodivergent Population is a practical, neurodiversity-affirming professional development workshop for speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, educators and other allied health professionals working with neurodivergent children and adolescents.

Many of the children we support are expected to advocate for themselves before they have the language, confidence or opportunity to do so. This workshop explores how we can intentionally build self-awareness, identity, communication and advocacy skills throughout therapy rather than treating self-advocacy as an end goal.

Grounded in neurodiversity-affirming practice and real-world clinical application, this training provides practical strategies that can be integrated into everyday therapy sessions across disciplines.

During this workshop you'll learn how to:
* Understand what self-advocacy is—and what it isn't.
* Explore the foundations of self-advocacy, including identity, autonomy, emotional awareness and self-determination.
* Support children to recognise and communicate their strengths, challenges, preferences and support needs.
* Build the language and confidence needed to ask for help, request accommodations and express boundaries.
* Embed self-advocacy opportunities naturally into therapy, school and everyday life.
* Balance safety, autonomy and decision-making while supporting increasing independence.
* Partner effectively with families, educators and other professionals to create environments where self-advocacy is welcomed and respected.

Throughout the day you'll explore practical activities, therapy resources, discussion prompts and clinical examples that can be implemented immediately with children across a range of ages and communication profiles.

By fostering self-awareness, communication and autonomy from an early age, we can help neurodivergent children become confident participants in decisions that affect their lives, not by changing who they are, but by giving them the tools and opportunities to have their voices heard.

Because every child deserves to understand themselves, communicate their needs, and be an active participant in the decisions that shape their future.
