Directed by Jenny Murray USA 2018 | 96 minutes
With Trump threatening to invade, Ortega imprisoning or exiling any opposition, come brush up on the initially successful people’s revolution of 1979.
**Special Guest and MC tonight is Bonny Briggs who was a brigadista from the Indigenous brigade to Nicaragua in 1988.
Similar to the ISM in the west bank or the flotilla activists trying to break the Israelis blockade today, people have travelled across borders to stand alongside communities resisting colonialism and empire for generations. In the 1980s, thousands of international volunteers joined brigades to support and learn from the Sandinista Revolution. Come have a listen to this awesome queer Kamilaroi activist experience of being in Nicaragua during the post-revolutionary period.
As Dora Maria Telez recently said in an address at La Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris
“The authoritarian wave is the vanguard of a conservative world revolt, deeply connected to the new oligarchies,” she said. “Life tells us that temporizing with authoritarianism does not stop it and that, rather, it has serious consequences. If authoritarian power finds indifference or complacency… it will soon come for me and mine. The threat to the rights of others is also a threat to my rights.”
