Out Of The Deep | Alchemy X Josh Dema | MELBOURNE
About
Out of the Deep is Alchemy’s work for a cappella choir and solo cello, in collaboration with cellist Josh Dema. Exploring concepts of descent, transition and transcendence, spatially, sonically and emotionally, the performance unfolds across the three atmospheric levels of the Old Melbourne and Castlemaine Gaols. With music resonating from above and below, enveloping the audience in shifting layers of tone and depth, Out of the Deep stages the repertoire's themes in concrete architectural space, opening out the experience of musicality across the vertical and horizontal planes, as sound and structure intertwine. The diverse program spans the gamut from despairing lament to soaring ethereality, and from reimaginings of traditional Gregorian chant, through Renaissance and Baroque masters like Gibbons & Bach, to major contemporary choral composers such as Ola Gjeilo and Dan Forrest. Highlights include John Rutter’s stirring 'Out of the Deep,' William Barton’s extraordinary 'Kalkadunga Yurdu' (Kalkadoon Man), and the Australian première of movements from Sophie Webber's 'B2C: Bach Cello Suites to Choir' project.---------------------------
The Old Melbourne Gaol can be quite cold, especially in the evenings. We recommend bringing extra layers to stay comfortable during the performance.
