Breaking the scale – achieving outstanding results through team work and novel approachesThis presentation, which originally was presented as an Extended Abstract at the Australian Energy Producers Conference in 2026, outlines how a multidisciplinary team identified and remediated downhole scale impairment in the BassGas Yolla field. Faced with a 75% decline in asset production and deteriorating well performance, the team combined production engineering, chemistry, operations and process optimisation to develop and execute a novel offshore scale-remediation campaign. The presentation covers the investigation, treatment design, field execution and results, which tripled field production rates while helping extend asset life and supporting the critical supply of the Eastern Australia gas market.
Tom Hamilton is Manager of Production Engineering at Beach Energy and an experienced petroleum engineer spanning roles in utilities and oil and gas in Australia and the UK. He has worked in offshore and onshore environments, specialising in well performance, production optimisation, nodal analysis, and integrating subsurface and surface insights into operational decisions to improve production. Tom has supported major production optimisation and asset life-extension initiatives, and is known for translating complex technical challenges into practical solutions. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering (first class hons.) and a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering.
