Greasy Chicken Orchestra
About
On Sunday 13 Aug, from 4-6:30PM, The GCO will perform three sets of their finely-tuned brand of swinging 20s/30s jazz, with a focus on early Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton–tunes including such early jazz classics as East St. Louis Toodle-oo, Chant of the Weed, and Frog-I-More Rag, as well as stylistically harmonious originals.Previous appearances include The Manly Jazz Festival, The Sydney Con Jazz Festival, The Illawarra Jazz Festival, Jazz In The Park (Balmain), Bondi Pavillion, Parramatta Riverside, and many others.
"Johnston has always understood that jazz's history is a rich resource rather than a liability, and with this band he immerses himself almost completely in this era of energised and good-humoured dance music."
–John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald.
"This project serves to redefine the often-underrated jazz ensemble music of the 1920s and 30s, a timely mission which I warmly applaud."
(★★★★4 stars) Eric Myers, The Australian
