We are delighted to welcome Distinguished Professor Katherine Biber to deliver the address at our third annual Law Dinner. Professor Biber, of the University of Technology Sydney, works at the intersection of law, history, and criminal justice. Beyond her renowned formal academic work, her acclaimed podcast, The Last Outlaws won the NSW Premier's History Award and was named Podcast of the Year at the Australian Podcast Awards. She joins us to discuss the book that grew from that work.The Last Outlaws reconstructs the story of Wiradjuri man Jimmy Governor and his brother Joe, whose actions in the winter of 1900 triggered one of the largest manhunts in the colony's history and whose trial and execution coincided with the birth of the Australian nation. Drawing on contemporary records and undertaken with the co-operation of the Governors' descendants, Professor Biber's account uses a single criminal case to illuminate the young nation's attitudes to land, race, and justice, and the emerging role of forensic ‘science’, policing, and the media in the courtroom. It is a story that speaks directly to questions law students will grapple with throughout their careers. We warmly encourage you to join us for what promises to be a memorable evening.
