'The Boyds in the Murrumbeena Landscape' Walk & Talk
About
'The Boyds in the Murrumbeena Landscape'
The Boyd family lived in Murrumbeena from 1913 until 1964. Over the course of these 51 years, Merric and Doris Boyd created some of their finest artworks and raised five highly creative children. It was also during these years that Murrumbeena transitioned from a community that included sprawling estate gardens, market gardens and open fields to the one we largely see today.
This tour, led by Colin Smith, will take participants on a journey across the cultural and physical landscape of Murrumbeena, and include the remarkable private garden of Dr John Springthorpe and the Boyds’ rambling garden in Wahroongaa Crescent.
Tour Leader: Colin Smith Colin has been researching and writing about the history of Murrumbeena for over 30 years. Much of his focus has been on the Boyd family of artists. He gives talks on Murrumbeena’s history and has published four books, including Merric Boyd and Murrumbeena, The Life and Art of Lucy Boyd Beck and Sunlight and Storm: The Life and Art of Penleigh Boyd. His last book, A Murrumbeena Scrapbook, was published in 2025 and is a photographic history of the suburb.
