Summary:Health service boards are accountable for clinical quality, safety and systemic risk, not just finances. Bristol, Mid Staffordshire and Djerriwarrh all exposed the same truth that boards that don't meaningfully oversee clinical performance are complicit in the conditions that allow harm. That creates a real opportunity for medically trained directors. In this interactive webinar, Dr Emily Kirkpatrick draws on her experience at both the executive and board table to explore the move from clinical leadership to the boardroom focused on director duties, the governance-versus-management boundary, clinical governance and risk oversight, moral courage, and emerging challenges including AI and public trust. Working through case studies, participants will leave with a practical roadmap for preparing for and excelling in non-executive director roles.
Learning objectives — participants will be able to:
Describe the framework governing Australian health service boards and the legal duties of doctor directors.
Distinguish board-level governance from executive management and recognise the mindset shift from clinical executive to NED.
Apply principles of clinical governance oversight, risk identification and moral courage at board level.
