Lectures on Tap @ The Gov
About
If you're a fiend for a YouTube video with your dinner, or are simply looking for a different way to get out of the house and learn something new to aid your cool Aunt/Uncle lore, this is made for you.Inspired by the original Lectures on Tap over in America, this activation brings industry experts into bars to give talks about their research. Think two 25-minute talks with a break in between, giving you plenty of time to head to the bar for another pint or a spot of dinner.
Held in the iconic Gov, you're sure to enjoy some good vibes before and after the talks. This particular activation is ideal for introverts, curious minds, or people just looking for something different on a Wednesday night. Below, you'll find details about the talks being discussed and the people giving them.
“Spared No Expense… Except on Palaeontological Accuracy: What Jurassic Park got wrong (and right) about dinosaurs”
Jurassic Park gave us terrifying Velociraptors, venom-spitting Dilophosaurus and a T. rex that apparently can’t see you if you stand still—but how much of it is actually accurate? Join us as we put Hollywood’s dinosaurs under the palaeontological microscope and explore what over 30 years of new fossils and research have taught us about how dinosaurs really looked, behaved and lived. From feathers and funky anatomy to dinosaurs that aren’t even from the Jurassic, it turns out the real prehistoric world may have been even stranger than Spielberg imagined.
“The Red Team Defence: when science fiction writers and scientists unite to anticipate future military threats”
Carl Von Clausewitz said, “There are very few men - and they are the exceptions - who are able to think and feel beyond the present moment”.
Jumping into the 21st century, who would deny that anticipating the conflicts of tomorrow is a tricky exercise? Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022? What comes next?
Defence experts have always been running prospective studies to prepare adequate responses but, in the undeniably capable hands of the military experts, what if we were still lacking imagination?
With that thought in mind, let's explore how an overseas Red Team Defence used sci-fi and arts to provide credible futuristic scenarios to cope with, and if we should transpose that approach to Australia.
