Social dancing has many different branches, rhythms and styles.

While Cha Cha Cha and West Coast Swing may look very different, there are many elements that connect them: rhythm, musicality, connection, timing, interpretation, technique and communication between dancers.

For this special VLS Workshop, we’re bringing together these two worlds for an afternoon of learning, exploration and connection.

THE PROGRAM

12:00–1:00 PM

CHA CHA CHA SHINES — BOOGALOO & FUNK

With Almendra & Richie

We’ll begin with a special Cha Cha Cha shines workshop exploring elements of Boogaloo and Funk.

We’ll work with rhythm, body movement, musicality, texture and individual expression, exploring how different influences can expand our movement vocabulary and interpretation.

1:00–2:00 PM

INTRODUCTION TO WEST COAST SWING

With the Founders of West Coast Swing Melbourne, Jacqui & Chris

For the second hour, we’ll step into the world of West Coast Swing and explore some of the foundations of this unique social dance style.

We’ll look at:

• Connection

• Timing & rhythm

• Musicality

• Partner communication

• Social dancing technique

• Adaptability & interpretation

No previous West Coast Swing experience is required.

WHY THIS WORKSHOP?

At VLS, our Special Workshops are designed to bring fresh information, new perspectives and different experiencesto our community.

We believe that becoming a better salsa dancer doesn't only happen inside the salsa world.

There are countless things we can learn from other dance styles and communities. These elements can give us new tools to improve our musicality, connection, technique, interpretation and social dancing.

This workshop is an opportunity to step outside the usual salsa environment, learn from another dance community in Melbourne and bring those new ideas back into your own dancing.

It’s about sharing knowledge, connecting communities and expanding our understanding of social dancing.
