Hong Kong’s renowned Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble has been awarded a prestigious grant from the China National Arts Fund 2026 for Echoes of Hong Kong Victoria Peak, a signature work composed by its Composer-in-Residence, Alfred Wong. Funded by the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, the ensemble will embark on an international tour for this project. This international tour will not only showcase the ensemble’s remarkable achievements in inheriting and pioneering "Hong Kong Chinese music culture", but also harness the music to share the Hong Kong story with the world.The concert “Echoes of Hong Kong Victoria Peak” will take place in Melbourne, Australia on September 27, 2026, and brings together the Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble (Hong Kong) and the Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra (Melbourne) for a captivating musical dialogue. Conducted by Kin Szeto, Yat Ping Chan, and Jinghao Lim, the performance features innovative arrangements of Cantonese music and pop classics, alongside evocative works celebrating the unique musical traditions of both Hong Kong and Australia.
Windpipe Chinese Music Ensemble will present the featured work Peak Circle Walk (from “Echoes of Hong Kong Victoria Peak”), taking audiences on a musical journey through Hong Kong. The ensemble will also perform a selection of classics, including Tango in Temple Street, New Colorful Clouds Chasing the Moon, Bright Moonlight, Strive for Life, Leslie Cheung Forever and Love and Passion ‑ Medley of Joseph Koo’s Golden Hits.
The programme will also feature a collaboration with renowned Australia-based banhu performer Dongyan Ma, who will join the ensemble for The Crescent Moon at Three in the Morning.
Chao Feng Chinese Orchestra will present works reflecting both Australian and Chinese musical influences, including Towards a Brighter Future and Kookaburra.
The concert will conclude with Medley of Cantonese Music Classics, a collaborative performance by the two orchestras featuring a selection of classic works by celebrated Cantonese music master Man Shing Lui. Bringing musicians from Hong Kong and Melbourne together on one stage, the finale celebrates the enduring friendship and cultural connections between the two communities through the shared language of music.
