Practice Guide for Supporting Autistic CallersJoin fellow Lifeline Crisis Supporter and volunteer researcher Cyndi Liang for an in-centre professional development session exploring how we can provide more accessible, inclusive and effective crisis support for autistic help seekers.
Drawing on her research and Practice Guide for Supporting Autistic Callers, Cyndi will explore how autistic people may experience and communicate distress differently, and the practical adjustments Crisis Supporters can make to better understand, support and assess callers.
During the session, we'll explore:
- Communication differences, sensory needs and processing time
- Using clear, direct and concrete language
- Adapting questions and pacing to individual callers
- Neurodiversity-informed suicide risk assessment
- Practical scenarios, strengths and coping strategies
The focus isn't on creating a separate model of crisis support. It's about adapting the skills we already use so that every caller has the best opportunity to be understood and supported.
