TroubadourFolk: George Mann+Alan Reid H'concert Tue 10 Nov26
About
George Mann (USA) and Alan Reid (Scotland) 6-9 p.m. Tuesday 10 NovemberHouseconcert Double Bill, with two truly great international songwriter/performers!
A former union organizer and activist based in Ithaca, New York, George Mann makes a welcome return to the Troubadour as part of his 2026 tour of E Coast Australia. He sings original songs as well as songs from the last century of the labor and social justice movements. Both are powerful and at times funny takes on the state of the nation. His concerts are part sing-along, part history lesson, and he can make you shout for joy, send chills down your spine or bring tears to your eyes in the same set.
He has a keen interest in labor and social history, and in 2013, George produced “The Almanac Trail” with Rik Palieri; the CD celebrates the music of The Almanac Singers and featured Pete Seeger narrating. He toured Australia, California and the Northwest twice in 2015, produced 31 concerts on the Joe Hill 100 Roadshow tours, and released “For the Road and The Sky” in October 2016. Most importantly, George is a great songwriter and singer who loves sharing stories and songs from the long history of folk music as much as he likes to sing his own songs! He has produced albums featuring such folk music legends as Utah Phillips, Pete Seeger and Tom Paxton, and produced national tours of the US and Australia in honour of The Almanac Singers (2013) and Joe Hill (2015). Recently George released his CD “This Chain” in October 2023, and in September 2024 he released a CD of the celebrated activist and singer Si Kahn’s songs, “Labor Day,” to honour Si on his 80th birthday. He has also -produced a new album with Mick Coates, “Ghosts of the Old West,” released in September 2025 which features songs for his 2025 and 2026 Australian tours of this country.
Alan Reid from Glascow, Scotland, is a Scottish folk multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, also returning to the Troubadour. He was a founding member of Scotland’s world famous Battlefield Band. In a career lasting 40 years he has recorded almost 30 albums with the band whilst touring and playing festivals all over the world, including Australia. In 2000 he started a duo with singer/guitarist Rob van Sante and recorded 5 albums, touring the U.K., U.S., Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand for the next 19 years.
In 2009 Alan was nominated in the Scottish Trad Awards in the songwriting category and in 2016 was inducted with fellow Battlefield Band colleagues in the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame. Since 2020 Alan has operated as a soloist with a mix of his own trad. style songs and traditional songs and tunes, all with a slant on Scotland’s history, geography and culture. Alan Reid has also recently teamed up with Scots balladeer and songwriter Christine Kydd to perform mostly traditional songs at several festivals and various venues in Scotland.
