About
Family Law & Domestic Violence: Practical Legal Foundations for Frontline Workers explores the Family Law and DVO legal frameworks in Queensland and the key legal issues that apply to the women you support.
This session is suitable for support workers, case workers, counsellors, social workers and other frontline professionals who may be supporting women experiencing DFV as well as navigating separation and the family law system.
FAMILY LAW 101
An accessible introduction to the key legal issues that arise following separation, including:
• Divorce and separation
• Parenting arrangements and children’s safety
• Property settlement and spousal maintenance
• The family law court process
• The impact of domestic and family violence, coercive control and financial abuse
• Recognising when a client needs legal advice or referral
• Practical, trauma-informed ways non-legal professionals can support clients through the family law process
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ORDERS (DVO) 101
A practical introduction to Queensland’s domestic and family violence protection framework, including:
• What constitutes domestic violence and coercive control
• Protection orders and the DVO application process
• What happens at court
• Evidence and conditions that may be sought in a DVO
• Recognising and responding to risk
• Coercive control, abuse by proxy and recent legal reforms
• Police protection directions
• Supporting victim-survivors without stepping outside professional boundaries
There will also be opportunities to ask questions, discuss common issues arising in practice and connect with other Townsville services over morning tea.
