Join Susannah Fullerton OAM (literary expert, author, ArtsNational lecturer and President of the Jane Austen Society of Australia), Adrian Dickens (personal jeweller and ArtsNational lecturer) and Amanda Jones (literary tour manager), for captivating talks exploring the lives, personalities and jewels of the fascinating Mitford family.Susannah Fullerton presents 'Those Mitford Girls!', a talk which looks at the lives and works of these unconventional sisters. The aristocratic Mitford women were writers and socialites, biographers and essayists. Jessica, who wrote Hons and Rebels and The American Way of Death, was a communist and activist. Unity worshipped Hitler. Nancy’s Love in a Cold Climate characters had a reckless upper-class Bohemianism, Diana became the most hated woman in Britain during World War II and Deborah became a Duchess.
Adrian Dickens presents 'The Jewels of Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire', exploring the family heirlooms and personal jewels of the youngest Mitford sister, as well as her distinctive love of animals—particularly chickens. Deborah Mitford was the youngest of the infamous Mitford sisters. Although the sisters were not originally known for their wealth or jewels, this changed when Deborah married Lord Andrew Cavendish, later the 11th Duke of Devonshire. Deborah started wearing various family jewels, as well as more personal pieces that illustrated her very “wonderful and ordinary” character.
Amanda Jones presents two short talks considering how a girl with a 1960s suburban Sydney childhood found herself pursuing a family, real and fictional, into the countryside of the Cotswolds and beyond. And in the process, paying an inordinate amount of money to look inside a cupboard!
