Join us on Thursday 24 September from 6:00pm for the opening of FITM: Faith in the Machine, an exhibition by Aileen Ng, as part of the 2026 4A LAB Emerging Digital Artist Program.
FITM: Faith in the Machine is part of a practice-led research project that explores perception, memory and human-machine relationships. The collection of works explores the qualities of these systems, such as anthropomorphism, embodiment, temporality and ambiguity, how they may affect the way we encounter technology and in turn project meaning, intention and agency onto machines.
The exhibition asks what it means to place faith in systems whose processes remain largely hidden from us. Whether interpreting a machine's output or relying on it to preserve the past, we fill gaps in what we know by projecting meaning onto what we encounter. FITM considers how this ambiguity shapes our relationships with technology, and questions how much agency we want to give machines that increasingly influence how we understand and remember our experiences.
Aileen Ng is a Naarm/Melbourne-based artist and researcher whose practice asks how encounters with technology shape human perception. Working across installations, digital and tangible works, she examines how interactions with machines and how qualities such as anthropomorphism, embodiment, temporality and ambiguity influence how we interpret and respond to them. Her work asks how we choose to interact with these systems and how it shapes human experience, relationships and ways of making meaning.
FITM: Faith in the Machine was developed with the support and collaboration of SensiLab, Monash University.
The 4A LAB Emerging Digital Artist Program is developed in honour of the late Australian artist Laurens Tan (1950 - 2025). It prioritises research and art which are grounded in new media practice, burgeoning technology and change. We are grateful to Tan's family for their generous support of the program.
