Beginning Pastel Painting with Lindy Whitton Term 4 2026
This class is designed to introduce the beginner or early-stage pastel artist to all the fundamentals of painting with pastels. Its aim is to allow you to learn, experiment and progress in a supportive and encouraging environment and find the joy in pastel art! We’ll cover all the basics through handouts, tutor demonstrations, simple and effective and fun exercises and lots of hands-on practice. We’ll cover:
• Materials: The different pastels and papers available and how they affect the painting process and the finished painting. This will cater to all budgets.
• Mark making. How to use the pastels to create different effects.
• The structure of a pastel painting: From underpainting techniques to the final flourishes
• Value , shape and colour: the basis for all paintings
