Why Be Good  (1929)

Tribute to early cinema and silent era superstar, Colleen Moore.

Author F. Scott Fitzgerald and silent film star Colleen Moore were the definitive cultural icons who defined and popularized the 'Flapper' and the spirit of the 1920s Jazz Age.

Fitzgerald famously encapsulated their parallel cultural impact with the quote:

'I was the spark that lit up Flaming Youth, and Colleen Moore was the torch. What little things we are to have caused all that trouble.'
Introduced by Ursula Dubosarsky AM, acclaimed Australian prize-winning author of over 60 books for children and young adults.

After the introduction, there will be a presentation of the late silent comedy classic, Why be good?

“Moore’s last silent film features entertaining performances and gorgeous design  and follows the themes of the devil-may-care, frivolous attitudes of 1920s’ partying youth. The story revolves around Moore’s perky, peppy Pert Kelly, a salesgirl who shakes the shimmy and cuts a mean Charleston at nightclubs and contests. After meeting a dashing wealthy heir, the pair are drawn to each other but the 1920s’ spirited flapper who plays naughty and loves to dance has to contend with the double standards of courtship and independence for a young woman in the era.”
