You've heard of a listening party, where everyone gathers to play a new album from beginning to end. But what about a reading party?Reading, the same thing, in company. It's a chance to put your phone away, settle in, and read something beautiful from beginning to end, together.
There aren't many books you can finish in one sitting, without sacrificing your entire day. But The Lady with the Dog, the new novella by Stella Prize-winning author Carrie Tiffany, is one of them. Out October 1, the 93-page novella is beautifully illustrated by Noel McKenna and is, quite simply, a gorgeous little book.
Loosely inspired by Carrie’s observations of her mother and stepfather in their final months, The Lady with the Dog is a deeply moving, poetic story about a woman living with Alzheimer’s, her devoted but unwell husband, and the dog they have recently adopted. As her condition worsens, the dog becomes both companion and symbol, an anchor to the world around her.
It is funny, poignant, elegant and expansive. Katie adored it and, despite being a slow-ish reader, inhaled it with a pot of tea in about 45 minutes.
So we're going to read it together. On Tuesday 6 October, you'll collect your copy of The Lady with the Dog, settle into the shop and spend 60 uninterrupted minutes reading it from cover to cover. We'll provide tea and biscuits, or wine if that's more your speed.
Then Carrie will join us to talk about the book, answer your questions and share something of the experience of writing it.
A reading party, followed by a conversation with the person who made the thing you're all sitting there quietly reading. We can't think of a better way to spend an evening.
Logistics things:
We have chairs with backs, stools and floor cushions here at the shop. You can choose, whatever suits you best.
Its 93 pages share space with whimsical illustrations and is structured mostly from paragraph-sized pieces of text. Readable in 60 minutes for even the slower readers amongst us!
Don't want to read it in the bookshop? You can either pick up your copy from October 1, or collect it on the evening and take it to a neighbouring bar or restaurant to be in a different kind of silence. If you're comfortable to, we really do recommend reading it collaboratively, or at least in its entirety in one sitting, to fully immerse yourself in the magic of Carrie's words.
About the author
CARRIE TIFFANY was born in West Yorkshire and grew up in Western Australia. Her first novel, Everyman’s Rules for Scientific Living, was shortlisted for the Orange Prize, the Miles Franklin Literary Award, the Guardian First Book Award and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize, and won the Dobbie Award for Best First Book and the WA Premier’s Award for Fiction. Her second novel, Mateship with Birds, was the winner of the inaugural Stella Prize and the NSW Premier’s Literary Award for fiction. Her third novel, Exploded View, was shortlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award and won the Queensland Fiction Book Award.
