About
Butoh Night vol.4 is featuring Cedar Roppola!
Cedar will be presenting a double show, featuring a series of short audiovisual works, Deliquescence, created over the past two years, alongside the live performance Fecund Deposition.
The audiovisual works in Deliquescence are derived from an embodied response to place — practising Butoh with bodies of water. The works explore the tension between the transient and the timeless: bodies, water and landscapes continually changing, yet somehow holding a sense of something enduring. Through Butoh, Cedar responds to place intuitively, allowing movement, sensation and image to emerge.
Fecund Deposition takes these ideas into live performance, exploring the fertile space between movement, matter and transformation.
Artist Bio:
Cedar Roppola is an interdisciplinary artist exploring embodiment, transformation, and place through eco-feminist and post-humanist perspectives. Informed by their long-term practice in Butoh and Okido Yoga, their work responds to shifting relationships between body, history, and environment as sites of resistance, repair, and connection.
Working across performance, AV, painting, and drawing, Cedar uses embodied practice to explore power, transformation, memory, and myth. Their work draws on personal and ancestral Finnish folklore, alongside lived experiences and relationships with place and the more-than-human world.
Cedar holds Visual Arts and Performing Arts degrees from QUT and UniSC, with extensive training in Okido Yoga and Butoh, including four years of residential training in the Netherlands and study with Butoh masters Masaki Iwana and Akira Kasai. Their work has been presented at Australian ARIs and institutions including Metro Arts, the Museum of Brisbane, QaGOMA, and Dark Mofo, with solo performance work presented across Europe and Japan. Cedar lectures in design at UniSC and facilitates Butoh classes.
