ACA Student Webinar: Supporting People Living with Dementia
About
Supporting People Living with Dementia and Their Families, Presented by Belinda KippenThis webinar is exclusive to ACA student members.
An Introduction for Student Counsellors
Dementia changes more than memory. It can affect communication, identity, relationships, independence and the way a person experiences the world around them.
So, what might it be like to live with dementia? And how can counsellors support the person- and the people who love them -as they navigate these changes? This online webinar offers a practical and reflective introduction to counselling alongside people living with dementia and their families.
Through reflection and group discussion, we will explore the lived experience of dementia, practical communication skills, and person-centred approaches that support dignity, autonomy, identity, and connection.
We will also consider the impact of dementia on families, including changing roles, grief and loss, and how narrative approaches can help people hold onto preferred stories.
About Belinda Kippen
Belinda Kippen is an experienced health professional with a background in nursing, midwifery, counselling and clinical supervision, supported by leadership experience in the community sector. She holds a Master’s degree in Counselling from QUT, is registered with AHPRA as a nurse and midwife, and is a registered counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). Belinda also served as Vice-President of the Australian Clinical Supervision Association from 2021–2023.
Belinda’s interest in supporting people living with dementia and their families is both professional and personal. From June 2020 to June 2023, she was involved in Dementia Australia’s Advocacy Program following her mother’s diagnosis of dementia. During this time, she contributed to awareness-raising and advocacy aimed at creating positive change for people living with dementia and those who support them.
This experience strengthened Belinda’s commitment to person-centred approaches when working with people and families impacted by dementia. She is particularly interested in how counsellors can remain curious about the person behind the diagnosis, support dignity and identity, and respond to the changing relationships and experiences that dementia can bring.
Belinda works in private practice, providing clinical supervision to professionals across the helping professions, including nurses, midwives and counsellors, as well as counselling for people seeking support to navigate life’s challenges. In 2026, she co-developed PULSE Supervision, a comprehensive online supervision training course.
