A Day in Carlton: Claire Thomas in conversation
About
Join us at Readings' A Day in Carlton, 24 hours celebrating books, culture and communityLa Mama Salon is a series of intimate conversations at La Mama Theatre. Seating only 30 people, it’s a space designed for confessions and creations.
Hear Claire Thomas, author of 'On Not Climbing Mountains', discussing the fragilities of nature and the endless reverberations of art with Readings’ own, Angela Crocombe.
In 'On Not Climbing Mountains', a woman arrives in Geneva, the first stop in a train journey through the country of her father’s birth. She yearns to be outside time – untethered and alone – but she soon becomes immersed in the stories resonating all around her.
She will find traces of Mary Shelley and Fleur Jaeggy; android pioneers in 18th-century Neuchatel; Charlie Chaplin, Patricia Highsmith, and striking workers drilling through the earth to create the vast Gotthard Tunnel; Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary as they summit Everest; Lenin and the Dada artists in early 20th-century Zurich.
