About

Selecting and Using Indigenous Literature: Infusing Indigenous Perspectives into Educational Practice

The School of Education is delighted to invite you to this Twilight Seminar - Selecting and Using Indigenous Literature. Led by industry experts Associate Professor Nayr Ibrahim, Professor Nicola Daly, Dr Libby Jackson-Barrett, and Associate Professor Helen Adam, the seminar brings together expertise in multilingualism, children's literature, and equitable education.

This presentation explores selecting and using Indigenous children’s literature to infuse Indigenous perspectives into classroom practice. The facilitators will highlight their own research and practice across the contexts of Australia, Norway and New Zealand, all contexts with a strong national focus on Indigenous education. Attendees will gain insight into the opportunities and challenges educators face when infusing Indigenous perspectives through literature, along with practical considerations for selecting and using Indigenous texts thoughtfully and respectfully.

About the presenters

Associate Professor Ibrahim (Nord University, Norway) researches multilingualism, identity and creative methodologies with children, having previously led Young Learners and Bilingual Education for the British Council in France. Professor Daly (University of Waikato) is a sociolinguist leading Marsden-funded research into Indigenous voices in picturebooks and co-directing the Waikato Picturebook Research Unit. Dr Jackson-Barrett (Edith Cowan University) is Associate Dean and Senior Indigenous Researcher, focusing on culturally responsive pedagogy and Aboriginal children's literature. Associate Professor Adam (Edith Cowan University, PETAA President) researches diverse literature for equitable literacy, recently published Creating Equitable Literacy Learning Environments (Routledge, 2026) following her Churchill Fellowship.

This seminar will introduce the INFUSE framework (Jackson-Barrett & Isaacs-Guthridge) as a pedagogical tool to support educators in this important practice. It will interest educators, teacher educators, and researchers working in literacy, Indigenous education, or culturally responsive pedagogy.
