Originally written as a novel, ‘The War of the Worlds’ by H.G. Wells was first presented as a radio play by Orson Welles and the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. The live performance, conducted as a Halloween special on October 30th 1938 caused widespread panic and chaos as listeners tuned in on their radios to the bogus Mars attack on Earth. This chaos occurred despite the fact that the audience was constantly told and reminded that none of which they were listening to was real.
In M2’s adaption of ‘The War of the Worlds’ the audience experiences the original story as told by H.G Wells, however they are also exposed to the possibility of a Mars attack occurring again in the near future. Past and future are juxtaposed, as events are repeated, yet similar responses by authorities to the situation and impended doom of humanity are evident.
In the end, both past and present timelines converge, highlighting how humans have an innate need to believe everything they see and hear through the media and the danger in which we face in believing a false reality.
As a former American president once told us, “What you're seeing and what you're reading is not what's happening… it’s fake news.”
