LECTURE - THE STORY OF TARTAN
Say the word ‘tartan’ and you immediately think Scotland. “Records refer to it as ‘mottled’, ‘marled’ and ‘sundrie coloured’, but perhaps the best description comes from the Gaelic word breacan, meaning chequered.” The story of tartan is chequered as the material itself. The great tartan revival started in 1822, when George IV visited Edinburgh, and on this occasion, it was suggested that people wear their respective tartans. Later Queen Victoria and Prince Albert loved tartan.
