This course is most useful for professionals that interact with Pasefika peoples in one way or another, particularly counsellors and community engagement workers.
The Pacific Island community in Australia is predominantly Polynesian, including Cook Islanders, Maoris, Samoans and Tongans. It is a growing population in Victoria, with a large proportion of the community residing in Brimbank and Wyndham.
VASA Consultancy delivers Pasefika cultural awareness training for organisations that work with Pasefika peoples and/or their communities, drawing on grass-roots knowledge and expertise.
This training is an interactive learning and creative experience (including song and dance) with opportunities for discussions, practical advice and recommendations offered.
The program includes:
- Overview of Pasefika cultures and histories – from the great oceanic waves of migration to 20th/21st century diaspora in the western world
- Pasefika communities of Australia – impact and challenges
- Pasefika community engagement – possible strategies and the Dos and Don'ts
This course is designed and facilitated by Rita Seumanutafa, VASA Consultancy - Pasefika community engagement consultant, community leader, advocate and researcher (BMusHons, PhD Candidate - University of Melbourne). Rita is a highly-respected leader, educator and member of the Pasefika community in Melbourne. Since emigrating to Australia 18 years ago, Rita has founded many Pasefika-focused groups in order to provide more visible opportunities for her community to celebrate culture and identity.
